Naples: A Typographic Journey

University Project, 2017

Brief

To explore the stark duality of modern Naples through beautiful and varied found typography. This was inspired by a holiday I took to the ancient city where I witnessed burned out cars, piles of rubbish in the street, soldiers in military vehicles, castles rubbing shoulders with ugly industrial estates, and century old churches coated with a layer of graffiti.

Solution

My solution was to create the design journal: Naples: A Typographic Journey. Aimed at graphic designers, the journal tells the story of Naples through the varied, juxtaposing found typography I saw on my travels. Editorial design is a catalyst to allow designers to learn about and enjoy the city.

Naples has a
good side...

Naples has a good side...

...and a bad side

...and a bad side.

Creating the typography

The journal features a strong focus on direct comparisons between contrasting typography. I illustrated the typography photos to remove their original context and ensure the focus is kept on the letterforms themselves.

The pages can then be folded out in order to see the full piece of typography in all its glory.

Spreads

The journal also includes articles that explore the context surrounding these contrasts. The reader is guided through Naples’ past glory, it’s descent into into drug-filled slums, and ends with the state of the modern city: rough but still human, chaotic but alive.
